<p><span style="color: #888888;"><strong><a href="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/en/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/lipstick.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4517 alignleft" style="border: 0pt none; margin: 8px;" title="Hundreds of lipsticks contaminated with lead" src="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/en/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/lipstick.jpg" alt="" width="254" height="309" /></a></strong></span>A new analysis of lead in lipstick conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reveals that the problem of lead in lipstick is worse and more widespread than previously reported. The new study found lead in 400 lipsticks tested by the agency, at widely varying levels of up to 7.19 parts per million (ppm) &#8212; more than twice the levels reported in a previous FDA study.</p>
<p>February 6th 2012, the<a href="http://safecosmetics.org/"> Campaign for Safe Cosmetics</a> sent FDA a letter asking them to correct misleading statements on their website about the <a href="http://www.safecosmetics.org/downloads/DrLindaKatz_LeadLipstick_2.pdf">supposed safety of lead in lipstick</a>. The agency has studied only the levels of lead in lipstick, and has conducted no health studies or safety assessments.</p>
<p>In January, an advisory committee to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a new report asserting that there is no safe level of lead for children, and stressing the importance of preventing lead exposure for children and pregnant women.</p>
<p>“Lead builds up in the body over time and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant exposure levels,” said Mark Mitchell, M.D., MPH, policy advisor of the Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice and co-chair of the Environmental Health Task Force for the National Medical Association.</p>
<p>“Lead is a proven neurotoxin that can cause learning, language and behavioral problems. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure, because lead easily crosses the placenta and enters the fetal brain where it can interfere with normal development,” said Sean Palfrey, M.D., a professor of pediatrics and public health at Boston University and the medical director of Boston&#8217;s Lead Poisoning Prevention Program.</p>
<p>The FDA study of 400 lipsticks was quietly posted on the agency’s website in December. The most contaminated brand in the study, Maybelline Color Sensation by L’Oreal USA, contained more than 275 times the amount of lead found in the least contaminated, and least expensive, brand, Wet &amp; Wild Mega Mixers Lip Balm &#8212; demonstrating that price is not an indicator of good manufacturing practices.</p>
<p>“How many millions of women have applied and reapplied lead-containing lipsticks since we first raised concerns about this problem five years ago? How many kids have played with their mom&#8217;s lipstick?” said Janet Nudelman, interim director of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and policy director at the Breast Cancer Fund. “It’s time for L’Oreal to get the lead out of its products, and for FDA to set a safety standard for lead in lipstick.”</p>
<p>The FDA said it is currently evaluating whether to recommend an upper limit for lead in lipstick. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is urging FDA to set a maximum limit for lead in lipstick based on the lowest lead levels cosmetic manufacturers can feasibly achieve. U.S. Senators Barbara Boxer, John Kerry and Dianne Feinstein have also urged FDA to take action to reduce lead in lipstick.</p>
<p>The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is also calling on L’Oreal to make a public commitment to reformulate its lipsticks to ensure the lowest possible levels of lead. L’Oreal makes five of the 10 most lead-contaminated brands in the FDA study.</p>

<p><strong>Scent marketing alarms the trade supervision and labor unions </strong></p>
<p>Businesses that use fragrances in order to encourage customers to linger and buy, are becoming increasingly common. The scent marketing industry promotes the retail branch strongly. The fragrances that one finds in the shops are mixtures of different <a href="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/en/aromatherapy-can-produce-harmful-indoor-air-pollutants/">natural essential oils</a> or chemical compositions. Neither is harmless for employees or customers. In Denmark, the trade supervision and labor unions are keeping their eye on the American fashion chain, &#8220;Abercrombie &amp; Fitch&#8221;. The fashion chain is known for using the fragrance Citronellol, an aromatic oil that is classified as questionable because it can be harmful to one&#8217;s health and it can trigger allergies. The Danish trade supervision is currently committed to putting an end to the scenting in order to protect the employees and customers of the fashion chain.</p>
<p><strong>Authorities and labor unions are going up against scented store environments</strong></p>
<p>In Denmark, labor unions are paying close attention to the authorities&#8217; course of action against the American fashion company &#8220;Abercrombie &amp; Fitch&#8221;. In their shops, it smells strongly of perfume. The significant fragrance is supposed to bind the customer to the brand and increase sales. The newspaper &#8220;Politiken DK&#8221; reports that so-called scent marketing has extremely increased in Denmark in the past three years. Anyone who visits certain stores frequently or is employed there, can develop allergies. It is an unnecessary burden on the employees, because many of the fragrances can cause allergic reactions &#8211; the newspaper quoted the head of the trade supervision.</p>
<p><strong>Contamination of indoor air with chemicals and allergenic fragrance oils</strong></p>
<p>The perfumes for a scented environment are often led directly into the store through the air conditioning and ventilation system. Smaller shops set up bottles with aromatic oils, containing wooden sticks which release the fragrance into the room. Both are questionable, not only for people who already suffer from perfume allergies, but also for asthmatics and chemically sensitive people (MCS). Even healthy people may sensitize over time and develop allergies.</p>
<p><strong>The trade supervision wants to protect employees and customers</strong></p>
<p>We are most likely dealing with allergens, which are injected into the stores, is what the head of the trade supervision told the newspaper &#8220;Politiken DK&#8221;. That&#8217;s why the authorities tried to contact &#8220;Abercrombie &amp; Fitch&#8221; at the end of last year. The authorities tried to make it clear to them that they wanted to protect employees against the high concentration of perfume in the shops, because it is an unnecessary burden.</p>
<p><strong>Labor unions are receiving more and more complaints</strong></p>
<p>Danish labor unions report that they receive more and more complaints from union members about the scenting of their workplace. Therefore, the actions of the trade supervision in the case of &#8220;Abercrombie &amp; Fitch&#8221; are being closely observed. It is a major health problem for the employees in those stores, but also for the customers, said a union spokesperson to &#8220;Politiken DK&#8221;. The customers, unlike the employees have the choice and can simply stay away from the scented store. The employee unfortunately does not have this choice, especially in times when everyone is happy to even have a job.</p>
<p>It remains to be seen how the American company will behave, what measures the Danish trade supervision will take, and how much pressure the Danish labor unions will make. If the Abercrombie &amp; Fitch&#8221; management is smart, they will stop exposing their employees and customers to substances that can cause illness. Sick employees cost a company money, and when customers realize why they don&#8217;t feel well in a shop and stay away, they too, can cost the company a lot of money.</p>
<p>The German Federal Environmental Agency has been warning against the use of fragrances for this purpose for years – through several press releases and it&#8217;s own published background paper which writes about  this issue, „<a href="http://www.umweltdaten.de/publikationen/fpdf-l/3550.pdf">Fragrances: When something pleasant becomes a burden</a>.&#8221; (german) An increase of scented shops has also been reported in Germany. So far, there is no authority or union which is really trying to prevent it.</p>

<p><strong>Fragrant essential oils may release various VOCs into the air</strong></p>
<p>Spas that offer massage therapy using fragrant essential oils, called aromatherapy, may have elevated levels of potentially harmful indoor air pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ultrafine particles, according to an article in Environmental Engineering Science, a peer-reviewed journal published by <a href="http://www.liebertpub.com">Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.</a> . <p>Fragrant essential oils, derived from plants, may release various VOCs into the air. VOC degradation caused by the reaction of these compounds with ozone present in the air can produce small, ultrafine byproducts called secondary organic aerosols (SOAs), which may cause eye and airway irritation.</p>
<p>Taiwanese researchers Der-Jen Hsu (National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology), Hsiao-Lin Huang (Chia-Nan University of Pharmacy and Science, Tainan), and Shiann-Cherng Sheu (Chang-Jung Christian University, Tainan) tested both fragrant and Chinese herbal essential oils for SOA formation in a controlled-environment study chamber under different test conditions. They also performed air sampling and analysis in spa centers that offer massage therapy using essential oils.</p>
<p>The authors compared SOA levels associated for the various fragrant and herbal essential oils tested and present their results in the article, “Characteristics of Air Pollutants and Assessment of Potential Exposure in Spa Centers during Aromatherapy.” They conclude that the layout and ventilation within a particular spa may affect the level of indoor air pollutants produced during massage with aromatherapy.</p>
<p>“Dr. Der-Jen Hsu and his colleagues have done a very nice job in bringing attention to often overlooked health risks associated with luxuries intended to enhance our sense of well-being,&#8221; says Domenico Grasso, PhD Editor-in-Chief and Vice President for Research, Dean of the Graduate College, University of Vermont (Burlington).</p>

<p><a href="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/en/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Baby-Bad1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-4339" style="border: 0pt none; margin: 8px;" title="Toxic Baby Shampoo" src="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/en/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Baby-Bad1.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="215" /></a>More than two years after leading health and parents’ groups asked Johnson &amp; Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) to reformulate its flagship baby shampoo to remove a chemical that releases formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, the company is still using the formaldehyde-releasing ingredient in Johnson’s Baby Shampoo in the United States, Canada and China, while making formaldehyde-free versions of the shampoo in several other countries, according to a new analysis conducted by the Campaign for Safe Cos- metics.</p>
<p>“Clearly there is no need for Johnson &amp; Johnson to expose babies to a known carcinogen when the company is already making safer alternatives. All babies deserve safer products,” said Lisa Archer, director of the <a href="http://www.safecosmetics.org/">Campaign for Safe Cosmetics</a> at the Breast Cancer Fund.</p>
<p>Yesterday, after Johnson &amp; Johnson received word of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics report, the company<a href="http://www.johnsonsbaby.com/a-statement-on-ingredients-in-the-news"> released a statement</a> saying it is no longer introducing new products with formaldehyde-releasing preservatives and has reduced its use of the chemical by 60 percent in the U.S. market and 33 percent globally over the past few years.</p>
<p>“We know that some consumers are concerned about formaldehyde, which is why we offer many products without formaldehyde releasing preservatives, and are phasing out these types of preservatives in our baby products worldwide,” said the statement.</p>
<p>Archer commented, “We’re glad to see that the Johnson &amp; Johnson is taking this seriously. This commitment is a big step in the right direction. We look forward to the day when we can tell consumers the company’s entire product line is free of carcinogens and other chemicals of concern.”</p>
<p>For the new analysis, entitled <a href="http://www.safecosmetics.org/article.php?id=887">Baby’s Tub Is Still Toxic</a>, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics purchased and reviewed labels of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo sold in 13 countries to see if the products contained quaternium-15, a chemical preservative that kills bacteria by releasing formaldehyde.</p>
<p>Formaldehyde was recently added to the U.S. government list of known human carcinogens by the National Toxicology Program, under the Department of Health and Human Services. Formaldehyde and quaternium-15 are also potent allergens that can trigger rashes and other skin inflammation problems. According to a peer-reviewed paper in the Journal of the Dermatology Nurses’ Association, quaternium-15 is “the most sensitizing formaldehyde-releasing preservative and has been repeatedly shown to be a strong allergen that can cause contact dermatitis.”</p>
<p>The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics analysis reveals that Johnson’s Baby Shampoo sold in the United States, Australia, Canada, China and Indonesia contains quaternium-15, while Johnson’s Baby Shampoo formulas sold in Denmark, Finland, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Sweden and the U.K. contain non-formaldehyde preservatives.</p>
<p>“The American Nurses Association has adopted a precautionary approach based on the Precautionary Principle. In this application, even in the face of scientific uncertainty, if a chemical is strongly suspected of potential harm, it should be exchanged for a safer substitute,” said Amy Garcia M.S.N., R.N., C.A.E., Chief Programs Officer, Executive Office, American Nurses Association.</p>
<p>&#8220;Preventing toxic chemical exposures before they happen is the keystone of corporate responsibility. We call on Johnson &amp; Johnson to remove carcinogenic formaldehyde from its products. It’s time to protect all children, regardless of their nationality,&#8221; said Peter Wilk, M.D., executive director of Physicians for Social Responsibility.</p>
<p>In May 2009, ANA and PSR joined the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and many other health and environmental groups in formally asking Johnson &amp; Johnson to reformulate its baby products after lab tests revealed that Johnson’s Baby Shampoo contained two carcinogens—formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane—that were not listed on labels.</p>
<p>In September 2009, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics wrote again to Johnson &amp; Johnson, asking the company to immediately remove the formaldehyde-releasing chemical quaternium-15 from its baby products in light of new research linking the chemical to increased rates of allergic contact dermatitis.</p>
<p>The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and ANA have since met several times with Johnson &amp; Johnson executives to discuss these concerns.</p>
<p>In response to consumer demand, the company launched a new “natural” version of baby shampoo that does not contain chemicals associated with formaldehyde or 1,4-dioxane. However, the original Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, which is priced at about one-half the cost of the new “natural” shampoo, has not been reformulated in the U.S. market.</p>
<p>Yesterday, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics—along with the American Nurses Association, Physicians for Social Responsibility and more than 20 other parents’ and health groups representing more than 3 million people—sent another letter to Johnson &amp; Johnson, asking the company to remove formaldehyde-releasing chemicals from all its children’s products in all markets worldwide and replace them with safer alternatives. The letter asked for the company to make a commitment by November 15.</p>
<p>“While it is encouraging to see that Johnson &amp; Johnson has made progress in formulating a safer ‘natural’ version of its iconic baby shampoo, now is the time for the company to rise to the occasion and make the safer products the world market is demanding for all its customers.” said Archer.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Evidence for the causes of environmental diseases have been around for a long time</strong></p>
<p>The doctor and scientist Doris Rapp is one of those who not only practice environmental medicine, but has also made environmental medicine the most important thing in her life. The American spent two weeks in Germany. The reunion with Prof. Rapp was very productive and we were lucky enough to spend a beautiful day on the Moselle. Here is a small summary.</p>
<p><strong>Researcher documented environmental disease </strong></p>
<p>I met Prof. Rapp for the first time at a congress in Bad Emstal about 18 years ago. It was a crucial experience. In her presentation, she showed a video about a teacher who became ill from contaminated carpeting in the school. The teacher was filmed during a reaction to contaminated dust from the carpet. This video vividly conveys to the viewer what MCS is and what a reaction can look like. At that time I was at the very beginning of my own illness and had had similar reactions to certain pesticides. The teacher experienced convulsions and fell unconscious. I thought &#8220;my goodness, that&#8217;s me, that&#8217;s exactly like me, that&#8217;s what you have&#8230;“ After the lecture I spoke with Prof. Rapp and that was the beginning of an ongoing exchange of information and an interesting friendship. We met again at conferences in Germany, Holland and in the U.S., visited each other in Germany and the United States and exchanged e-mails. When I visited her in Scottsdale, she showed me one of her video archives. She had stored thousands of videos of children whom she had treated. They showed the patients during and after therapy and during testing of foods, mold, pollen, dust mites or chemicals. They displayed impressive evidence that can remove any last doubts as to the existence of environmental illnesses and allergies.</p>
<p><strong>We can no longer ignore environmental illnesses </strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/en/criminal-proceedings-terminated-for-accounting-fraud-against-environmental-physican/">Dr. Binz</a> and his wife invited the environmental doctor for this most recent visit to Germany. We had actually arranged to meet for a trip along the Moselle, which would start before lunch. We had a warm reunion and before we knew it we had already exchanged information and ideas and were in the midst of planning for future projects.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m over 80 years old now and have no children, I don&#8217;t really need to be doing all this and I could be enjoying my peace at this age, but I see what&#8217;s going on, and I simply cannot remain silent. We have so many chemicals in our environment, in the food we eat, in the water we drink and the air that we are constantly breathing. They affect each of our body systems and we can no longer ignore this. Almost every second person in my country has cancer and that is just not acceptable”, says Doris Rapp.</p>
<p>&#8220;The politicians and the public must realize the impact the flood of chemicals has on us and no one should keep insisting that we do not know where all the increasing diseases that occur are coming from. The evidence is there. We have animal testing to prove it. That&#8217;s why, as a doctor, I ask: How much more has to happen before we admit to the real causes?  I won&#8217;t accept hearing when one says, “Yes, but there&#8217;s nothing we can do about it.”  Yes, there is, because you can educate yourself and there&#8217;s a hell of a lot you can do,” says Prof Rapp, who is enraged about the current situation.</p>
<p><strong>Solutions are often very simple </strong></p>
<p>Prof. Rapp is no one who can be at odds with the world and ignore the solutions. She is in the process of writing another book. &#8220;It will be a small book, only 30 pages. Every reader can easily understand how he/she can shape his environment in order to stay healthy. The tips in this book will not cost anyone a fortune, they can easily be implemented without major expense. It will help anyone who wants to change something and wants to improve his health. <span style="color: #888888;"><strong>The doctor cites two examples: </strong></span></p>
<p>&#8220;Many people react to foods, but are not sure towards which foods. Expensive tests are not necessary. I advise people to think about what they eat most, foods that they downright crave. Experience has shown that these are the foods that are eaten every day and most likely those which cause reactions. The solution: omit the suspected food for a week. You can test one food after another. This costs nothing! &#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Some people live in a house that is contaminated with pollutants or contaminated by mold. My experience is that five out of seven people can  improve their health by 70% if they obtain a high quality air cleaner that is capable of filtering hundreds of chemicals from the air in your home. Such a device may cost a bit, but I have often seen patients who got better over night. So it&#8217;s worth it if you are unable to directly move out of the apartment or house.”</p>
<p>The new book will be published this year, and Professor Rapp has authorized me to translate it into German. She also gave me permission to translate videos and other books into our language, contributing knowledge to allergy sufferers and chemically sensitive people in the German-speaking countries, helping them to find a way back into life.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>In younger children with mild asthma symptoms, the benefit of vitamin C was greatest</strong></p>
<p>Depending on the age of asthmatic children, on their exposure to molds or dampness in their bedroom, and on the severity of their asthma, vitamin C has greater or smaller beneficial effect against asthma, according to a study published in the Clinical and Translational Allergy.</p>
<p>Proposals that vitamin C might be beneficial in the treatment of asthma date back to the 1940s, but the findings from controlled trials have been conflicting.</p>
<p>Drs Mohammed Al-Biltagi from the Tanta University in Egypt and Harri Hemila from the <a href="http://www.helsinki.fi/university/">University of Helsinki</a> in Finland analyzed the effect of 0.2 grams per day of vitamin C on 60 asthmatic children aged 7 to 10 years. The effect of vitamin C on the forced expiratory volume per one second (FEV1) was modified by age and exposure to molds or dampness. In the younger children aged 7.0 to 8.2 years with no exposure to molds or dampness, vitamin C administration increased the FEV1 level by 37%. In the older children aged 8.3 to 10 years with exposure to molds or dampness in their bedroom more than one year before the study, vitamin C increased the FEV1 level by only 21%.</p>
<p>The effect of vitamin C on the asthma symptoms was modified by age and the severity of asthma symptoms. In the younger children aged 7.0 to 8.2 years with mild asthma symptoms, the benefit of vitamin C was greatest. In the older children aged 8.3 to 10 years who had severe asthma symptoms, the benefit of vitamin C was smallest.</p>
<p>Drs Al-Biltagi and Hemila conclude that there is strong evidence that the effect of vitamin C on asthmatic children is heterogeneous. They consider that it is important to carry out further research to confirm their findings and to more accurately identify the groups of children who would receive the greatest benefit from vitamin C supplementation.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Top-selling scented liquid laundry detergent and scented dryer sheet  contains hazardous chemicals, including two that are classified as  carcinogens</strong></p>
<p>The same University of Washington researcher who used chemical sleuthing to deduce <a href="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/en/scented-consumer-products-shown-to-emit-many-unlisted-chemicals/">what’s in fragranced consumer products</a> now has turned her attention to the scented air wafting from household laundry vents.</p>
<p>Findings, published online this week in the<a href="http://www.springer.com/environment/environmental+health+-+public+health/journal/11869"> journal Air Quality, Atmosphere and Health</a>, show that air vented from machines using the top-selling scented liquid laundry detergent and scented dryer sheet contains hazardous chemicals, including two that are classified as carcinogens.</p>
<p>“This is an interesting source of pollution because emissions from dryer vents are essentially unregulated and unmonitored,” said lead author <a href="http://www.ce.washington.edu/people/faculty/faculty.php?id=43">Anne Steinemann</a>, a UW professor of civil and environmental engineering and of public affairs. “If they’re coming out of a smokestack or tail pipe, they’re regulated, but if they’re coming out of a dryer vent, they’re not.”</p>
<p>The research builds on earlier work that looked at what chemicals are released by laundry products, air fresheners, cleaners, lotions and other fragranced consumer products. Manufacturers are not required to disclose the ingredients used in fragrances, or in laundry products.</p>
<p>For the new study, which focuses on chemicals emitted through laundry vents, researchers first purchased and pre-rinsed new, organic cotton towels. They asked two homeowners to volunteer their washers and dryers, cleaned the inside of the machines with vinegar, and ran full cycles using only water to eliminate as much residue as possible.</p>
<p>At the first home, they ran a regular laundry cycle and analyzed the vent fumes for three cases: once with no products, once with the leading brand of scented liquid laundry detergent, and finally with both the detergent and a leading brand of scented dryer sheets. A canister placed inside the dryer vent opening captured the exhaust 15 minutes into each drying cycle. Researchers then repeated the procedure with a different washer and dryer at a second home.</p>
<p>Analysis of the captured gases found more than 25 volatile organic compounds, including seven hazardous air pollutants, coming out of the vents. Of those, two chemicals – acetaldehyde and benzene – are classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as carcinogens, for which the agency has established no safe exposure level.</p>
<p>“These products can affect not only personal health, but also public and environmental health. The chemicals can go into the air, down the drain and into water bodies,” Steinemann said.</p>
<p>The researchers estimate that in the Seattle area, where the study was conducted, acetaldehyde emissions from this brand of laundry detergent would be equivalent to 3 percent of the total acetaldehyde emissions coming from automobiles. Emissions from the top five brands, they estimate, would constitute about 6 percent of automobiles’ acetaldehyde emissions.</p>
<p>“We focus a lot of attention on how to reduce emissions of pollutants from automobiles,” Steinemann said. “And here’s one source of pollutants that could be reduced.”</p>
<p>The <a href="http://depts.washington.edu/exposure/feedback_from_the_public.html">project’s website </a>also includes letters from the public reporting health effects from scented consumer products. Steinemann says that people’s reports of adverse reactions to fragranced air coming from laundry vents motivated her to conduct this study.</p>
<p>Steinemann recommends using laundry products without any fragrance or scent.</p>

<p><strong>Life-threatening asthma attack in airplane triggered by Permethrin</strong></p>
<p>An Irish businessman suffered from a severe allergic reaction during an Air France flight because the airline sprayed the pesticide permethrin on board. James Lapham sued Air France and received €50,000 compensation for damages for the first time in history as was stated in the Irish Independent newspaper. Mr. Lapham, an asthmatic, barely survived the incident and is still receiving medical treatment after 8 months.</p>
<p><strong>Pesticides are often part of everyday life on board</strong></p>
<p>The spraying of pesticides on planes is not unusual. For hygiene reasons, and because it is feared that pests could be transported, many countries require the spraying of pesticides. Normally, the passengers are not informed or warned. The estimated number of passengers who suffered health problems during a flight due to pesticide on board is most likely high. Airlines worldwide now fear that this case could constitute a precedent, and that other passengers suffering from ailments may call upon this case.</p>
<p>A German lawyer led a <a href="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/2009/06/02/insektizideinsatz-im-ferienflieger-welche-ansprueche-hat-der-passagier/">lawsuit against Air France in 2008</a>. He had also suffered health problems caused by the spraying of pesticides on board. The airline denied him the information as to what pesticide had been used. The Frankfurt regional court&#8217;s verdict in December 2008 gave the attorney only half right.</p>
<p>An even bigger worry for the airlines than the single passenger cases, is complaints from flight staff who have become ill due to pesticides and may take advantage of the current case.</p>
<p><strong>Asthma attacks caused by pesticides</strong></p>
<p>The Independent writes that James Lapham was on a flight from Rabat to Dublin when the incident occurred. He had only been on board for 10 minutes when he experienced breathing difficulties. The Irish Independent reports that the flight attendants had sprayed permethrin, a neurotoxic pesticide, in the cabin. Permethrin is a Pyrethroide, and is a pesticide which is known for, among other things, triggering allergic and non-allergic asthma. Permethrin is prohibited on flights in the U.S. because the pesticide has been classified by the EPA as carcinogenic since 1997.</p>
<p><strong>Emergency landing due to asthmatic&#8217;s reaction to pesticide</strong></p>
<p>The Irish businessman reacted so violently to the permethrin that the flight attendants had to give him oxygen. This intervention was not enough and Mr. Lapham&#8217;s asthmatic condition worsened and the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Morocco. The businessman was brought by ambulance to a hospital, where he was stabilized with cortisone. The Independent stated that Mr. Lapham might indeed work again, but is still in need of medical treatment.</p>
<p><strong>Sick due to pesticides in airplane &#8211; not an isolated case</strong></p>
<p>The Irish businessman James Lapham is not an isolated case. Particularly flight staffs on long-haul flights in hot regions have been complaining for years about the use of pesticides and the damaging health effects caused by the toxic chemicals. Court cases in different countries are pending and flight attendants have organized internationally for years.</p>
<p>James Lapham pled at the Irish High Court at the Montreal Convention. Passengers cannot receive more than € 100,000 damages under this convention, the Irishman won half, €50.000. Whether more cases will be recognized can not be predicted, because airlines still claim that permethrin had been recommended by the WHO, although scientific studies on the health damaging effects of neurotoxic pesticide are increasing.</p>

<p><strong>More attention needed to the disease factor in indoor pollutants</strong></p>
<p>The awareness of the importance of uncontaminated food and pollution-free products in everyday life is growing worldwide. People are striving for a healthy and unpolluted living environment. Especially noteworthy are efforts that have been observed recently in Norway. In this Scandinavian country, efforts are prioritized to protect children, particularly against pollutants and allergens. One of the most active pioneers is Kjell Aas, a retired professor who supports the Norwegian Asthma and Allergy Association, with his profound knowledge. This scientist is anxious to clear ignorance about environmental and pollution-related diseases. He clarifies the facts to the authorities and population in ways which are understandable.</p>
<p><strong>Environmental diseases are not mysteries, but scientifically explainable</strong></p>
<p>For many people it is still difficult to understand that polluted air can also cause health problems or symptoms beyond just the respiratory tract. Research has delivered to us today only fragmentary explanations, but there are some entirely understandable explanations and solid scientific evidence of things not delivered to us, which Kjell Aas tries to make as general knowledge for the public.</p>
<p>The scientist Kjell Aas said, &#8220;Medical science has not yet managed to explore all the biochemical mechanisms behind the disease. The same goes for the so-called environmental diseases, such as hyperactivity, migraines, and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). To think that these environmental illnesses are something mysterious or inexplicable, or even that they are psychologically conditioned is just incorrect. This can be explained by one or more biochemical reactions. Both the physical and mental functions and activities are regulated by more or less complex chemical processes. The reactions are dependent on the dose and individual tolerance levels.”</p>
<p><strong>Individual biochemistry sets the pace</strong></p>
<p>“From a scientific aspect,” says Kjell Aas, “one must internalize that our internal biochemistry relies on the smooth functioning of a variety of cells with specific receptors and signal systems operating, and upon thousands of enzymes and co-enzymes. These biochemical processes can lead inhibitory and stimulatory mechanisms and integrated &#8220;amplifier systems&#8221; to gain significant effects.”</p>
<p>Kjell Aas says that the following is important for the public to realize, &#8220;Every person is an individual with his/her own individual biochemistry. A few milligrams of cocaine can change the personality and emotional life of an individual,” says the scientist, and continues, “or imagine alcohol having the same affect on the population, but as everyone knows, the tolerance threshold is different for each unique individual.”</p>
<p><strong>The air we breathe daily</strong></p>
<p>The scientist points out in his illustrative design, that adults consume 12 to 15 kg of air per day, and those gaseous chemicals are in the air we breathe, in a more or less high concentrations. Some of these gases combine with others, making them more harmful. These include ozone and other gases that lead to oxidation processes.</p>
<p>In addition, we take in particles in the air we breathe each day without ceasing. We breathe millions of fine particulate matter every hour of every day. These include chemical substances that are associated with the particulate matter which are in a position to pass as easily as breathing gases, and to move fully into blood, lymph and tissue fluid, the researcher points out.</p>
<p><strong>Children are not little adults</strong></p>
<p>Kjell Aas thinks special attention should focus on improving the current situation for children. He justifies this by saying that children can tolerate very little and will get sick easily from chemicals. &#8220;We have a variety of cells in our body,” the scientist explained, “all based on chemicals. The chemicals must agree to allow the cells to function properly and then the body will not get sick. &#8221;</p>
<p>The Norwegian elaborated his statement and says, &#8220;If an unwanted chemical substances are inhaled, then the chemical balance is upset and so are the cells, and thus we get sick. The cells are blocked by these unwanted chemicals and cannot send out important chemical messengers responsible for our health.”</p>
<p>“Who exactly needs to understand these statements?” Kjell Aas wonders. It is important for all of us to realize the significant consequences for children, in particular, whose bodies are still under construction and development. This enlightenment is exactly what Kjell Aas hopes to awaken in all of us in hopes that we all begin to act accordingly. The Norwegians therefore ask in conclusion that we should internalize the following important fact:</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>&#8220;The air in a room which is acceptable for children, it is also acceptable for adults, but indoor air which is not acceptable for adults, can already make children ill.”</strong></p>

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Integration of a student with MCS and CFS</strong></span></p>

<p>In May 2010, I initiated a parents&#8217; evening and at first I asked for a low-emission class. I got 100% support from the school and would like to express my thanks to the head of the school. Teachers, parents, classmates and even grandparents decided to help my child, and contributed actively to reducing class-pollution, by making the classroom<a href="http://www.lung.ca/protect-protegez/pollution-pollution/indoor-interieur/scents-parfums_e.php"> fabric softener and perfume-free</a>.</p>
<p>My son now attends the school since August 2010 with great success. He has found friends at school and can participate in the classroom. Of course, the new phase of life is often very tiring. Despite absences and lateness, and extreme tiredness, my son is a good student and learning is easy for him.  Even though the daily routine can be difficult and very draining, the morning rising, despite aching limbs, despite nocturnal asthma and / or violent nose bleeds, my son still has motivation to do homework and to have a few social contacts in the afternoon. My little son has mastered this task quite well. I too, am very exhausted by my environmental disease, and often do not know where I will get more energy for the next school day. So we live from day to day, weekend to weekend, and holiday to holiday. In particular, we look forward to the summer holidays, because the short two week vacation is not enough to rest from the deep exhaustion.</p>
<p>It is actually a gift that parents and teachers are giving to our family by accommodating my son’s health condition.  Our situation is now a rare one, but I am sure that other schools in the future will allow the integration of MCS-afflicted children. Low-emission schools are important for all children. This should not be a political topic to be ignored any longer.</p>
<p>At the general parents&#8217; meeting during the school year in September 2010, I got a little speaking time to thank the parents and relatives for their attempts of integration and tolerance for my son’s health conditions. I also was curious regarding their experience, so I created a short questionnaire:</p>
<blockquote><p>Dear Parents,</p>
<p>I would like to express my gratitude to you for allowing my child to experience inclusion and to have an opportunity to attend school without prejudice for his health conditions. I appreciate your understanding, your cooperation, and your discretion in dealing with the harmful fragrances. Thank you very much.</p>
<p>Two questions interest me. (I prepared a questionnaire which I was allowed to distribute. The response was positive and all of the 11 parents present agreed to complete the questions immediately. There are 14 children total in the class.)</p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>How was it to switch to a fragrance-free school?</strong></span></p>

<li>We already lived without using many scented products</li>

<p>I was also interested if the families now can smell better after the participation in the fragrance free classroom because normally the ability to smell gets weaker after a while because the receptors get less sensitive due to dealing with scents. Perfumes especially can paralyze the areas in the brain which deal with scents.</p>
<p><strong>Do you and your family find an increase in perceiving smells and perfumes again?</strong></p>

<p>Conversion to a fabric softener and perfume free school was no problem for the 99% of parents who took part to be scent free, and for 81% the change was no problem at all.</p>
<p>The desire and willingness to take environmentally friendly actions are there, but people just need to get the right tools in their hands to take action. The market for fragrance-free products exists and is increasing every day. The advertising for the fragrance-free market brings success.</p>
<p>My conclusion is that I can follow these wonderful acts by this German mother:<strong> &#8220;Everything is running smoothly&#8221;</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>With education, we move forward &#8211; silence is counterproductive</strong></p>
<p>The population is becoming increasingly aware of the health damage to chemical exposures, thanks to the many environmental disasters, food scares, vaccine damage, etc., and the terrible nuclear accident in Japan. The Enlightenment month of May is a very important tool for us to further educate others. May we all have the with power to enlighten others. The successes like this story are there.</p>
