<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>In younger children with mild asthma symptoms, the benefit of vitamin C was greatest</strong></p>
<p>Depending on the age of asthmatic children, on their exposure to molds or dampness in their bedroom, and on the severity of their asthma, vitamin C has greater or smaller beneficial effect against asthma, according to a study published in the Clinical and Translational Allergy.</p>
<p>Proposals that vitamin C might be beneficial in the treatment of asthma date back to the 1940s, but the findings from controlled trials have been conflicting.</p>
<p>Drs Mohammed Al-Biltagi from the Tanta University in Egypt and Harri Hemila from the <a href="http://www.helsinki.fi/university/">University of Helsinki</a> in Finland analyzed the effect of 0.2 grams per day of vitamin C on 60 asthmatic children aged 7 to 10 years. The effect of vitamin C on the forced expiratory volume per one second (FEV1) was modified by age and exposure to molds or dampness. In the younger children aged 7.0 to 8.2 years with no exposure to molds or dampness, vitamin C administration increased the FEV1 level by 37%. In the older children aged 8.3 to 10 years with exposure to molds or dampness in their bedroom more than one year before the study, vitamin C increased the FEV1 level by only 21%.</p>
<p>The effect of vitamin C on the asthma symptoms was modified by age and the severity of asthma symptoms. In the younger children aged 7.0 to 8.2 years with mild asthma symptoms, the benefit of vitamin C was greatest. In the older children aged 8.3 to 10 years who had severe asthma symptoms, the benefit of vitamin C was smallest.</p>
<p>Drs Al-Biltagi and Hemila conclude that there is strong evidence that the effect of vitamin C on asthmatic children is heterogeneous. They consider that it is important to carry out further research to confirm their findings and to more accurately identify the groups of children who would receive the greatest benefit from vitamin C supplementation.</p>

<p><strong>Life-threatening asthma attack in airplane triggered by Permethrin</strong></p>
<p>An Irish businessman suffered from a severe allergic reaction during an Air France flight because the airline sprayed the pesticide permethrin on board. James Lapham sued Air France and received €50,000 compensation for damages for the first time in history as was stated in the Irish Independent newspaper. Mr. Lapham, an asthmatic, barely survived the incident and is still receiving medical treatment after 8 months.</p>
<p><strong>Pesticides are often part of everyday life on board</strong></p>
<p>The spraying of pesticides on planes is not unusual. For hygiene reasons, and because it is feared that pests could be transported, many countries require the spraying of pesticides. Normally, the passengers are not informed or warned. The estimated number of passengers who suffered health problems during a flight due to pesticide on board is most likely high. Airlines worldwide now fear that this case could constitute a precedent, and that other passengers suffering from ailments may call upon this case.</p>
<p>A German lawyer led a <a href="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/2009/06/02/insektizideinsatz-im-ferienflieger-welche-ansprueche-hat-der-passagier/">lawsuit against Air France in 2008</a>. He had also suffered health problems caused by the spraying of pesticides on board. The airline denied him the information as to what pesticide had been used. The Frankfurt regional court&#8217;s verdict in December 2008 gave the attorney only half right.</p>
<p>An even bigger worry for the airlines than the single passenger cases, is complaints from flight staff who have become ill due to pesticides and may take advantage of the current case.</p>
<p><strong>Asthma attacks caused by pesticides</strong></p>
<p>The Independent writes that James Lapham was on a flight from Rabat to Dublin when the incident occurred. He had only been on board for 10 minutes when he experienced breathing difficulties. The Irish Independent reports that the flight attendants had sprayed permethrin, a neurotoxic pesticide, in the cabin. Permethrin is a Pyrethroide, and is a pesticide which is known for, among other things, triggering allergic and non-allergic asthma. Permethrin is prohibited on flights in the U.S. because the pesticide has been classified by the EPA as carcinogenic since 1997.</p>
<p><strong>Emergency landing due to asthmatic&#8217;s reaction to pesticide</strong></p>
<p>The Irish businessman reacted so violently to the permethrin that the flight attendants had to give him oxygen. This intervention was not enough and Mr. Lapham&#8217;s asthmatic condition worsened and the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Morocco. The businessman was brought by ambulance to a hospital, where he was stabilized with cortisone. The Independent stated that Mr. Lapham might indeed work again, but is still in need of medical treatment.</p>
<p><strong>Sick due to pesticides in airplane &#8211; not an isolated case</strong></p>
<p>The Irish businessman James Lapham is not an isolated case. Particularly flight staffs on long-haul flights in hot regions have been complaining for years about the use of pesticides and the damaging health effects caused by the toxic chemicals. Court cases in different countries are pending and flight attendants have organized internationally for years.</p>
<p>James Lapham pled at the Irish High Court at the Montreal Convention. Passengers cannot receive more than € 100,000 damages under this convention, the Irishman won half, €50.000. Whether more cases will be recognized can not be predicted, because airlines still claim that permethrin had been recommended by the WHO, although scientific studies on the health damaging effects of neurotoxic pesticide are increasing.</p>

<p><strong>Significant reduction in asthma-related admissions as well as a reduction in admissions related to acute coronary syndrome</strong></p>
<p>Workplace smoking bans are gaining ground globally, and one study has shown that they may have significant health effects. The study, conducted by researchers in Dublin, found that emergency room admissions due to respiratory illness dropped significantly in Ireland after the implementation of a workplace smoking ban, compared to admissions that took place before the ban went into effect.</p>
<p>The study will be presented at the ATS 2011 International Conference in Denver.</p>
<p>The nationwide workplace smoking ban was introduced in Ireland in March 2004. Although previous studies have shown workplace smoking bans lead to reduced systemic inflammation and improved respiratory health, as well as reduced emergency admissions due to acute coronary syndromes, Imran Sulaiman, MD, pulmonology resident at Galway University Hospitals, Galway, Ireland, who led the study, said there was little data concerning the effect of such bans on respiratory illness in an adult, working-age population.</p>
<p>&#8220;Comparing admissions prior to and after the smoking ban in Ireland we saw a significant reduction in emergency admissions due to cardiopulmonary disease with a trend towards reduced respiratory illness admissions,&#8221; said Dr. Sulaiman.</p>
<p>&#8220;The most pronounced reduction in admissions was in the 20- to 29-year-old age group,&#8221; added Dr. Sulaiman, who completed the study while a resident at Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Dublin.</p>
<p>The researchers also noted a significant reduction in asthma-related admissions as well as a reduction in admissions related to acute coronary syndrome.</p>
<p>To conduct their study, the researchers evaluated data from the Hospital Inpatient Enquiry (HIPE), a computer-based database system designed to collect demographic, clinical and administrative data on discharges and deaths from hospitals nationwide. Admissions data relating to emergency pulmonary, cardiac and cerebrovascular hospital admissions for the two years preceding, and the two years succeeding the implementation of the smoking ban were collected, and population, weather, pollution and influenza data for the same time periods were obtained from the official sources.</p>
<p>The researchers used the data to evaluate any change in emergency admissions due to all pulmonary disease and combined cardio-pulmonary illness between the two periods. In addition, they examined admissions due to specific pulmonary diagnoses, acute coronary syndrome and acute cerebrovascular syndrome. The analysis was divided into age and gender groups, and restricted to the working-age population (age 20-70 years).</p>
<p>There was a significant reduction in emergency hospital admissions due to cardio-pulmonary disease in the two years following the smoking ban, and a trend towards reduced pulmonary admissions. The most pronounced decrease in pulmonary admissions was observed in the 20- to 29-year-old age group. A significant decrease also was seen in emergency asthma admissions, and there was a trend towards fewer admissions with acute coronary syndrome, especially among men aged 50 to 59 years and 0 to 69 years. No difference was observed in cerebrovascular disease.</p>
<p>&#8220;The reductions in these admissions may result from reduced exposure of vulnerable individuals to environmental tobacco smoke,&#8221; Dr. Sulaiman said. &#8220;These results further emphasize the benefit of reducing secondhand smoke exposure.</p>
<p>&#8220;We already know the disastrous effects smoking has on our health,&#8221; he continued.&#8221;This study further proves that the implementation of a workplace smoking ban improves general health and also reduces hospital burden by respiratory illness, one of the most common illnesses to present to the emergency services.&#8221;</p>
<p>Further research should be done to confirm this study&#8217;s findings, and to compile data from other countries that have implemented workplace smoking bans, he said.</p>

<p><strong>Nurturing health or destroying it? Contradictions for consumers?</strong></p>
<p>I am sincerely grateful for drug stores near me which carry gluten free products and high quality supplements; however, recently I am disturbed by a trend in a store in which I frequently purchase items.</p>
<p>As I have gone to the check- out counter, in the last months I am continually asked if I would like to try the latest perfume of the day, as the staff stands ready to spray me with the bottle in hand. This is alarming to one with chemical sensitivities. I calmly state,“ I have severe reactions to the chemicals used in that bottle”. They apologize and are ready and armed for the next customer. Nevertheless, they continue to expose people with lung problems to these open bottles of air freshener oils on the next aisle.</p>
<p>Now, I see open bottles of perfumes surrounding the entire counter so there is actually little room left to place my items down. I struggle to breathe as I check out and pray I don’t have to wait one additional minute for them to answer a phone. Why should I suffer while they are benefitting from my purchases?</p>
<p>Honestly I must say that having a drug store with health food items, high quality nutritional supplements and perfumes, seems to be a contradiction to me. In fact some of the natural remedies are packaged in cardboard and at times when I take the completely natural tablets inside I experience a perfume /chemical taste, possibly due to the perfumes sprayed frequently on the customers and perhaps the perfumed oils with their chemical compounds permeating the store.</p>
<p>I honestly cannot continue to purchase items here unless my disability is considered in the managing of the items this shop has chosen to simultaneously sell. Thus I have written a letter which I hope will be taken seriously by the management. I am sure that our disability community, as well as the <a href="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/en/epa-conference-calls-for-consideration-of-asthmatics/">asthma community </a>needs an immediate policy change in those stores which continue to daily expose and potentially harm customer health with these <a href="http://www.csn-deutschland.de/blog/en/scented-consumer-products-shown-to-emit-many-unlisted-chemicals/">perfumes and scented oil products</a>.</p>

<p>I have been your faithful customer for almost two years. I love your selections of gluten free foods for my family, however, the last visits in your store I found it difficult to pay for my food items because of all the perfumes located all around your cash registers.</p>
<p>My family, like 15-30% of the population has multiple chemical sensitivity or as some would call it, upper reactive airway disease. In order to have equal access to public locations like those with other disabilities enjoy, we must have all chemical products like perfumes away from the areas we need to access like the check out area.</p>
<p>It is also very stressful on the lungs, as I&#8217;m sure it is for the asthma population as well, to have your air fresheners/oils open in the store while we are shopping.</p>
<p>In consideration for our disability, we kindly ask you to move your perfumes to another location in your shop and to refrain from opening your oil air fresheners so our family and others with lung problems will be able to continue to shop with you and purchase your nutritional and specialized selections and supplements.</p>

<p>Santa has an ear for the needs of all children, including children with allergies, asthma and chemical sensitivity (MCS). Santas are always open to hear everything a child desires, meaning their secrets, worries and concerns. For many children this seasonal private talk with Santa is an important event when they can privately disclose what is really on their mind.</p>
<p>So this year we wish that all children, including those who suffer from allergies, asthma and chemical sensitivity (MCS), will have the opportunity to whisper something special into Santa&#8217;s ear. We have designed an action card for printing. (The best way to print the cards out is on more solid paper or light cardboard).</p>
<p>And because Santa Claus is known for really loving ALL children, with some help, we can make sure every Santa Claus may share the Christmas warmth with every child. Hand the Santa a Christmas card, asking them to give up after-shave, cologne, fabric softener, strong smelling deodorant, and other fragrances this season. Whisper in the ear of the Santa Claus when presentating the card, that this small favor of being fragrance free will make all children’s hearts and eyes glow with gratitude.</p>

This is the conclusion of a study led by researchers from the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC), published this week in the Journal of Hazardous Materials.</p>
<p>&#8220;The toxicological research has shown that many of the metallic particles in the smoke from fireworks are bio-reactive and can affect human health&#8221;, Teresa Moreno, a researcher from the IDAEA (CSIC) and lead author of a study that has been published this week in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, tells SINC.</p>
<p>The different colours and effects produced in these displays are achieved by adding metals to the gunpowder. When a pyrotechnic display takes place it releases a lot of smoke, liberating minute metallic particles (of a few microns in size, or even less), which are small enough to be inhaled deeply into the lungs.</p>
<p>&#8220;This poses a risk to health, and the effects are probably more acute in people with a background of asthma or cardiovascular problems&#8221;, Moreno explains. &#8220;The effects in healthy people are still unknown, but common sense tells us it cannot be good to inhale the high levels of metallic particles in this smoke, even if this only happens a few times a year&#8221;.</p>
<p>The study focused on the San Juan fiestas (the night of 23 June through to 24 June, 2008) in the Spanish city of Girona. The researchers analysed the levels of more than 30 chemical elements and compounds in May and June in order to confirm that the levels of lead, copper, strontium, potassium and magnesium skyrocketed after the fireworks were launched.</p>
<p>The team found the results were similar in other towns too. During the Mascletà (18 March), for example, in the Las Fallas fiestas in Valencia, levels of these elements rose once again, as well as others such as aluminium, titanium, barium and antimony, and also concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and sulphur dioxide (SO2).</p>
<p>Other studies have confirmed that the smoke from fireworks increases the presence of metallic particles in the skies over L&#8217;Alcora and Borriana (Castellón), Barcelona and even London (United Kingdom) during the Guy Fawkes&#8217; Night celebrations.</p>
<p>&#8220;People who live in cities already inhale significant amounts of contaminant particles stemming from traffic emissions, chimneys and cigarettes, and the dense smoke caused by fireworks only worsens this situation&#8221;, points out Moreno.</p>
<p><strong>Possible solutions</strong></p>
<p>The researcher compares the problem with that of tobacco. &#8220;The less you expose yourself to the smoke, the fewer negative effects it will have on your health, and so the best solution is to avoid inhaling it&#8221;.</p>
<p>According to the scientists, in the absence of a ban on fireworks, spectators should stay well back in a place not affected by the smoke and pay attention to the wind direction. They also recommend that fireworks displays should be sited in a place that ensures the plume of smoke will blow away from densely populated areas.</p>
<p>An added problem is the chemical mixtures in the different kinds of fireworks, since some contain extremely toxic metals such as lead. &#8220;There should be strict controls on fireworks imports so that those with the potentially most dangerous chemical composition can be avoided&#8221;, concludes Moreno.</p>

<p>For several years the Swedish Prof. Dr. Eva Millqvist researched the disease of hyperreactivity of the respiratory tract and the environmental condition of Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). She specializes in the range of responses to respiratory irritants.</p>
<p><strong>Sick from odors and fragrances</strong></p>
<p>Patients with respiratory symptoms which are triggered by chemicals and odors, are commonly found in allergy clinics. According to Millqvist and her team, these health problems are not explained by asthma or allergic reactions.</p>
<p>German patients frequently report that after they report reactions to chemicals or odors to their allergist, the prospect of seeing a psychologist has been recommended. Whether or not this recommendation is actually appropriate for these patients, it is precisely what this new study from Sweden addresses.</p>
<p><strong>Studies showed reactions</strong></p>
<p>Millqvist’s previous studies have shown that MCS patients often have an increased sensitivity to inhaled capsaicin. This ingredient of chili is famous sensory reactivity. A diagnosis of sensory hyperreactivity of the airways (SHR) is proposed for these kinds of complaints.</p>
<p>In a recent study this renowned scientist and two colleagues, sought to discover whether there is a relationship between asthma and sensory hyperreactivity (SHR). In addition, the research team wanted to investigate whether patients with signs of SHR had increased psychiatric morbidity (anxiety, depression, etc.).</p>
<p><strong>Patients were subjected to tests and questionnaires</strong></p>
<p>The researchers took 724 patients with suspected allergies or asthma from an asthma center. All patients had a questionnaire regarding reactions and behavioral disorders caused by fragrant substances.</p>
<p>A standardized Capsaicin test was carried out and then a questionnaire was given to assess psychiatric morbidity in patients with severe chemical sensitivity to identify those who suffer from SHR.</p>
<p><strong>No evidence of depression or anxiety</strong></p>
<p>Only about 6% of the asthma patients from the allergy center, who participated in the study, had sensory hyperreactivity (SHR). Millqvist and her colleagues stated that this is in consistent with the prevalence in the general Swedish population. There was no significant evidence that SHR is consistent with anxiety or is related to depression.</p>
<p><strong>Patients should insist on precise diagnostic evaluation</strong></p>
<p>The study appeared in the July 2010 issue of the medical journal &#8220;Annals of Allergy, Asthma &amp; Immunology.” Those patients who respond to chemicals and odors with hyperreactive respiratory symptoms should perhaps seek an experienced environmental medicine professional if their allergist makes a reference to the possibility of a mental illness.</p>

<p>Each year, 339 million visits take place at pools and water parks across the United States. Not only is swimming fun, but it&#8217;s also the second most popular form of exercise in the country. Because of this, disinfection of recreational pools is critical to prevent outbreaks of infectious disease.</p>
<p>However, Michael Plewa, U of I professor of genetics, said negative outcomes can occur when disinfection byproducts form reactions with organic matter in pool water.</p>
<p>Pool water represents extreme cases of disinfection that differ from the disinfection of drinking water as pools are continuously exposed to disinfectants.</p>
<p>&#8220;All sources of water possess organic matter that comes from decaying leaves, microbes and other dead life forms,&#8221; Plewa said. &#8220;In addition to organic matter and disinfectants, pool waters contain sweat, hair, skin, urine, and consumer products such as cosmetics and sunscreens from swimmers.&#8221;</p>
<p>These consumer products are often nitrogen-rich, causing concern that they may contribute to the generation of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts, Plewa added. When mixed with disinfectants, these products may become chemically modified and converted into more toxic agents. These disinfection byproducts can mutate genes, induce birth defects, accelerate the aging process, cause respiratory ailments, and even induce cancer after long-term exposures. In this study, collections from public pools and a control sample of tap water were evaluated to identify recreational water conditions that could be harmful to your health.</p>
<p>A systematic mammalian cell genotoxicity analysis was used to compare the water samples. Plewa said this sensitive DNA technology examined genomic damage in mammalian cells, allowing researchers to investigate damage at the level of each nucleus within each cell.</p>
<p>The study compared different disinfection methods and environmental conditions. Results proved that all disinfected pool samples exhibited more genomic DNA damage than the source tap water, Plewa said.</p>
<p>&#8220;Care should be taken in selecting disinfectants to treat recreational pool water,&#8221; Plewa advised. &#8220;The data suggest that brominating agents should be avoided as disinfectants of recreational pool water. The best method to treat pool waters is a combination of UV treatment with chlorine as compared to chlorination alone.&#8221;</p>
<p>Plewa recommends that organic carbon be removed prior to disinfection when the pool water is being recycled.</p>
<p>Also, swimmers can help reduce the genotoxicity of pool water by showering before entering the water. Pool owners should also remind patrons about the potential harm caused by urinating in a pool. These simple steps can greatly reduce the precursors of toxic disinfection byproducts, Plewa said.</p>

<p><strong>First Perfume and Fragrance- free Asthma Conference</strong></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.epa.gov/">American Environmental Protection Agency</a> is holding a large asthma conference from June 17-19, 2010, in Washington D.C.. For the first time ever, the EPA has a special conference feature which is to renounce fragrances and perfume. Thus, the EPA is sending a signal to indicate the fragrance issue and to provide participants with asthma, the possibility to participate at the <a href="https://www.epaasthmaforum.com/index.aspx">2010 National Asthma Forum</a>. Fragrances are among the principle factors for asthma attacks.</p>
<p>Nearly 300 experts and leaders, whose work is to improve the living conditions of people with asthma, are taking part in this event.  Primary decision makers of federal and state authorities, as well as those responsible for guidelines, managers of health authorities, scientists, physicians and leaders of self-help organizations are included in this group. Their goal is to design environments to assist in safe living for all asthmatics.</p>
<p>In order to allow all participants to take part in the conference, meaning a conference free of perfume, aftershave, hairspray, body lotion, fabric softener or scented deodorants, the federal agency sent out the <a href="http://iaq.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/iaq.cfg/php/enduser/doc_serve.php?2=Attendee_Logistics_060810">following reminder</a> online:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Asthma-friendly environments are our business &#8211; Please help us to make this a fragrance-free event by using fragrance-free personal care products and avoid perfumes and other irritants.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>This is a very positive step by the EPA. They have removed the largest known barrier for asthmatics and chemically injured people this year for the 2010 National Asthma Forum. World leaders on every continent should incorporate this humanitarian example by the EPA , for those disabled with illnesses affecting the breathing and lung function throughout the world.</p>

<p>A simple blood test can now predict whether newborn babies are at high risk of developing allergies as they grow older, thanks to research involving the University of Adelaide.</p>
<p>Professor Tony Ferrante, an immunologist from SA Pathology and the Children&#8217;s Research Centre at the University of Adelaide, says the new marker may be the most significant breakthrough in allergy testing for some decades.</p>
<p>&#8220;A protein in the immune cells of newborns appears to hold the answer as to whether a baby will either be protected, or susceptible to the development of allergies later on,&#8221; Professor Ferrante says.</p>
<p>Amounts of the cell signalling protein, called protein kinase C zeta, are much lower in children at risk of allergies.</p>
<p>Professor Ferrante says the blood test is far more effective than previous indicators, such as a family&#8217;s clinical history, or measuring the allergy-inducing antibody IgE.</p>
<p>In collaboration with Professor Susan Prescott from the University of Western Australia and Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, Professor Ferrante&#8217;s research team has refined the new marker for allergy risk, originally discovered in 2007, but now modified to a simple and manageable blood test at birth.</p>
<p>The researchers are also looking at whether fish oil supplements given to both pregnant women and those who have just given birth can reduce the risks of the children developing allergies.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is evidence that the levels of this important protein increase with fish oil supplementation to protect against allergy development,&#8221; Professor Ferrante says.</p>
<p>Australia has one of the highest allergy rates in the world, with 40% of children now suffering from allergic diseases, including food allergies, eczema, asthma and hay fever. These conditions frequently persist into adulthood, placing a heavy burden on the healthcare system.</p>
